Privacy Policy for Zimantic Beta

Effective date:

This policy covers Zimantic Beta, the test version of Zimantic for invited testers, distributed as a private item in the Chrome Web Store. It describes the version testers currently receive, which has features the public Zimantic does not have yet. The policy for the public Zimantic is at https://zimantic.grok.me/privacy.

Zimantic is a browser extension for people who read and write in a second language. This policy says what the extension does with your data. In short: Zimantic has no servers. Your pages, words and writing go only to the AI model you choose, and only when you ask for something.

Summary

  • The developer runs no server for Zimantic and receives none of your data: no pages, no text, no words, no settings, no usage statistics.
  • Text leaves your browser only when you use a feature, and it goes to the AI endpoint you configure (a model on your own computer, in your company, or a cloud provider you pick).
  • There is no account, no analytics, no telemetry, no crash reports and no advertising.
  • Your vocabulary deck, saved sentences, settings and history stay in your browser.
  • Options → Activity lists every request that left your browser: when, for which feature, to which host, and how many characters. It never stores the text itself.

Where data goes, and when

DestinationWhat is sentWhen
Your AI endpoint (the URL you set in Options → AI connection)The text the feature needs: the selection you rewrite or look up, the paragraph you translate or ask help for, the meeting notes you prepare, an image you choose to read (made smaller first, at most 1024 px), the words or sentences of a Review checkOnly when you use that feature
The shop that sells Zimantic (merchant of record, currently Lemon Squeezy: api.lemonsqueezy.com)Your licence key and a random name for this device, nothing elseWhen you activate or deactivate a key, and when a licence is active, a check at most once a week
Your speech endpoint (only if you choose it under Say it back)The recording of you reading a sentence aloudOnly when you press Say it in Review
Google (only if you choose browser speech recognition under Say it back)Chrome sends the recording to Google to turn it into textOnly when you press Say it in Review
Your online voice's provider (only if the voice in use is marked "Online", for example Microsoft's; the default voice, "Microsoft Katja Online (Natural)", is one when your browser has it)The browser sends the word or sentence to be spokenOnly when something is read aloud
The website an image or PDF comes fromA normal download of that image or PDF from its own addressOnly when you choose "read this image" or open a PDF link in the reader

Nothing else is contacted. The setup wizard looks for a model on your own computer (localhost) and asks your endpoint which models it has.

Zimantic does not control how your AI endpoint, the shop, your speech endpoint, Google or a voice provider handle what they receive; their own policies apply. Some free AI tiers may use the text you send to improve their models. For full privacy, use a model on your own computer: then your text never leaves it.

The Activity log

Every request Zimantic makes is listed in Options → Activity, by feature: Word Card, Word Swap, Translate, Translate page, Reading help, Explain, Tone, Reply, Meeting prep, Recurring mistakes, Quiz, Review, Image, Image test, Setup test, Prompt Editor, Say it back and Licence. Each entry has the time, the feature, the host, the number of characters (or bytes of audio) sent and received, and whether it worked; the text itself is never stored. You can export or clear the log.

What is stored, and where

StorageWhatLeaves the device?
chrome.storage.syncSettings: AI endpoint URL and key, model, languages, voice and reading speed, feature switches, per-site choices, prompts you changed in the Prompt Editor, the trial start dateChrome syncs it through your Google account to your other browsers if you use Chrome sync
chrome.storage.localYour Review deck (words, the sentence and page you met them on), Known Words, workplace terms, saved fixes, the Activity log, your licence key and device name, saved AI connection presets (URL and key; choosing one copies its URL and key into the synced settings above)No
chrome.storage.sessionThe text of the last image you read (until the browser closes)No

Zimantic keeps nothing anywhere else; the developer has no copy. Uninstalling the extension deletes this data. You can export your deck (Options → Vocabulary → Back up and move your deck) and remove words from it in Review at any time.

Purchases

Zimantic is sold once through a merchant of record, which handles payment, tax and your receipt; it holds your payment details and email under its own privacy policy. Zimantic itself stores only the licence key you type in, the email the shop reports for the key (shown in Options → Licence), and a random device name.
